Removing Projects from Configur

Projects have now been removed from Configur

Following on from our previous update in March, Projects have now been removed from the Configur platform. It's now even simpler to organise your data.

From now on, instead of arranging your content into projects, you can now add tags to your datasets, queries, dashboards and portals so that you and your teams can easily find the content they are looking for.

These changes will have a very limited impact on the way you and your teams use Configur or access your data and you don't need to do anything as a result of this change. All existing datasets, queries, dashboards and portals will automatically be tagged with the name of the project they currently belong to.

Read on to learn more about how to get the most out of these changes.

If you've got any questions please reach out to your Account Manager.

Why have we we removed Projects?

Projects were originally intended to help you separate your data for different teams and audiences.

Over time, we've realised that Projects have added an unnecessary level of complexity to the processes of creating, managing and accessing your data in Configur. As a result, we've decided to remove them.

What have we done to replace them?

We haven't just removed Projects though. We know that you still need to be able to find and work with your data easily, so we've introduced a few changes to not only replace Projects, but to make it easier to navigate Configur and work with your data. Let's take a look at the changes we've made, starting with adding tags to your content.

Migrating Projects to the new tagging system

All of your current datasets, queries, dashboards and portals have been migrated to the new tagging system automatically so you don't have to do anything.

You will now be able to tag datasets, queries, dashboards and portals with key words so you can quickly identify each of them and their purpose.

When we migrated all of your items, we automatically added a tag to each of them with the name of the project they came from.

Example: You have a a selection of datasets, queries, dashboards and portals in a project called 'Finance Tracking'.

When we migrate to the new tagging system each of those items will be given a 'Finance Tracking' tag.

Adding tags to your datasets, queries, dashboards and portals

The biggest change as a result of discontinuing projects is the introduction of tags across all different content types in Configur.

Tags are already used on Datasets, so we're simply extending their use to queries, dashboards and portals.

Adding tags

  • Tags can be added when editing or creating datasets, queries, dashboards and portals. All you need to do is click edit in the header and add your tags in the tags input.
  • You can select existing tags, or create new ones so you'll be able to tag different items with the same tags, making them easier to find. When you create a new tag, it will be added to your list so you don't have to re-add it every time.
  • You will need to have edit access rights in order to add or edit tags.

Searching Tags

You can use the search input to search for tags as well as names, or you can simply select a tag on an item and the list will automatically be filtered to only show the items that have those tags.

Migrating workspaces

Workspaces are also part of Projects so these were also removed when Projects were removed.

To ensure you still have access to all of the content that was previously organised into workspaces, we've converted each workspace item and their groups into a portal of it's own.

Example: You have a portal called 'Projects' with workspaces called 'Project Tracker', 'Project Spending' and 'Project Management'.

  • All groups from the 'Project Tracker' workspace will remain in the Projects portal
  • We'll create a new portal called 'Project Spending' and add all the groups from the 'Project Spending' workspace into it.
  • We'll create another new portal called 'Project Management' and add all the groups from the 'Project Management' workspace into it.

All user access rights have also been copied over so everyone that had access to these areas will still be able to access them.

Accessing and managing your content

As a result of removing Projects, accessing your datasets, queries, dashboards and portals is now done from via the main navigation bar. You will only be able to access datasets, queries and dashboards if you have portal access rights. Please contact your organisation manager if you need access to these.

All users will be able to access portals.

Managing data links

Another change is the way your data links are managed. Previously, each Project had it's own data link. Now, data links are managed in the organisation settings of Configur.

Only users who have organisation manager status can access the organisation settings.

To access them, you'll need to click on your user avatar in the bottom left corner and select 'Manage organisation'.

From here you can select 'Data links' to access them.

Any data links created previously will be automatically migrated when Projects are removed.

Viewing portals

As a result of removing projects, we have also removed workspaces. Previously you would be able to switch between workspaces using the selector in the top left of the screen.

Now, instead of switching workspaces, you'll be able to switch between viewing the portals you have access to by using the portal selector. Just use the input in the top left of the screen and you'll be able to jump effortlessly between your portals.

Using the old platform

The removal of Projects means you shouldn't need to access the backend of Configur very often, but there are some cases where you might need to. One of which is to manage your forms and APIs.

Projects will still be visible and you'll be able to manage forms & APIs for existing Projects, however you won't be able to make changes to datasets, queries, dashboards and portals. This will all take place in the new version of Configur.

These changes have been made so that it's easier than ever to work with your data in Configur.

If you have any questions, please get in contact with your account manager and we'll be happy to talk you though it.
